Happy Halloween!

So... a bunch of Halloween pics that I thought you would be interested in...
And at the end of the evening... I'm sure everyone wanted to crash like this little one... *smiles*
So... I thought I would select some of the pictures from tonight to post. It's late, so I don't think I'll post much.
Work went okay, we had a going away luncheon for one of my co-workers, it was nice to get together with some of the other Social Workers. I got my ID card today, but did it up closer to where I work... and I got it done a LOT faster!
Okay... Aloha! And Happy Halloween!

More orientation...

so... it was a rainy day...
"Peanut" trying to sleep... with her puppy toy (I think that's what I'm going to call her, but its not official yet).
So... I spent today inprocessing with our overall department, it was an interesting day... I got one orientation done, and the next person hadn't gotten in yet, so I needed to get a new employee ID card and thought I would take care of that... so I sat there for 2 hours only to be told that I needed something else done before they could do the card (the guy was as SLOOOOWWWWW as Molasses!). I managed to get the paperwork needed, but then he told me that it would take 24 hours to get into the system! UGH! I wasted over half of my morning! Then, at lunchtime as I was meeting other providers, one asked if I was the one there to do an intake... I said "no, I am there to do my in-processing" well, to make a long story shorter, apparently my supervisor found out there was an intake there today and thought it would be a good time for me to watch & learn how to do an intake. SO... I did. And then, about 2:15 I finally suggested that I was going to go get a bite to eat. (the woman I was with apparently had lunch before I met up with her). After that I finished my orientation in the department. Then had to come home through all the slow rush hour traffic. Speaking of which, I guess Honolulu has the worst national record for rush hour traffic. That's unbelievable... it is worse than NY? It's worse than LA? Wow.
Okay... time to sign off.
Aloha!

Happy Hump Day

So... work went okay today, although we had another bomb threat, this time in the morning (this is getting old!). I used my time productively though and went and did some networking with some clinics that I will be collaborating with in the future. It was time well-spent.

I *was* saddened to find out one of my former clients recently passed away (I just found out today, he passed away about a week ago, cause has yet to be determined, but he had some serious medical issues going on).

I *did* make it to the gym after work, so that was good. My puppy is doing well. I haven't settled on a name for sure yet, but I *am* leaning towards "Peanut."

Okay... short post today.

Aloha!

Puppy names... and Vog

We had SO much Vog today (Vog is like smog but comes from the Volcano on the Big Island, and we see it more when we have "Kona" winds). The picture above doesn't do it justice, it doesn't give you the full appreciation for how voggy it was today.
So... puppy names... My youngest granddaughter suggested "Princess" or "Crown." (Smiles... she's 6 and into Princess stuff). My oldest grand-daughter suggested "Snowball" or "Sassy." My middle daughter posted a picture of my puppy on her blog and got some suggestions, I think Daniel said "Elf", my oldest daughter suggested Tiny (then went onto say that everything for me has been "tiny" in Hawaii... my 1st appt, my current office... but then said that my biggest thing is my TV *smiles*). My daughters are all surprised that I got a puppy... and a Chihuahua at that. Which reminds me... I need to go see that movie "Chihuahua." *smiles* Let's see... other names have been "Peanut" (which is something I've actually thought about), and that's also a name that my former neighbor Michelle said she liked as well. I think one of the names my middle daughter's friends suggested was "Pistachio." I tend to call my puppy "Baby" or "Baby girl" or "Baby Cakes." Right now she's asleep on my right shoulder as I sleep.
Speaking of my puppy, her vet visit went okay, she's over 1 pound, but not big enough to get her shots yet, so she has to stay indoors... no parks for her! They gave her some de-worming medication today and clipped her nails, they gave me some puppy training tips and they said to come back in 3-4 weeks to get her shots & check her out. I also got her some treats today.
I took her into town after work and showed her to Michelle & Kaleo (and Sydney). Of course... Kaleo said if I ever need a sitter, he's more than willing! I stopped & dropped off a birthday card for Sarah (Janis' daughter), her birthday is tomorrow and she was feeling pretty depressed this week because her Mom can't be here for her birthday (it's Sarah's first birthday without her Mom). I also ordered some flowers to be delivered to Sarah at work tomorrow (that's where I dropped off the card tonight too... so that when Sarah gets into work tomorrow, it will be waiting).

Speaking of work... I got off early (which worked out good). But, it was because there was a bomb threat at the clinic. In our clinic we have quite a few sub-clinics, ours is not located with all the other clinics, and well, we were notified about an hour AFTER everyone else (we are in a temporary location). So... while there *wasn't* a bomb, it will be a learning experience that hopefully we can learn from. (like where the ball was dropped). Anyway, there was a question about whether or not we could go back in for several hours & it was within about an hour of when we were due to get off, so they released us. I thought I was going to have to get a ride home & get my spare keys, and catch a ride back up to get my car. I had left my keys in my office. But, just before I was going to leave, we got the "all-clear" notice. Whew!
We were in the middle of doing a group (I was co-facilitating) and everyone was outside. I went over to talk with my first supervisor up there & another supervisor (of the clinic where the Social Worker from last night suggested I come apply for a position coming open at their clinic). Anyway, as I was talking with them, one of the clients came up & said "Thanks for the group, the discussion was great!" It made me look good in front of the supervisors, although I really can't take any credit for it, because the main leader is awesome & great at encouraging group discussion. But even the one supervisor made a comment that said he was impressed that one of our clients would say he enjoyed group (most participants are there because they HAVE to be there, not because they WANT to be there).
Okay... I'm going to sign off... it's my bedtime... and my "baby" (puppy) has been interfering with my sleep. It's okay... I know eventually it will get better and she'll start sleeping through the night.
Aloha!

More puppy pics & my [tiny] office

So, I promised some pictures of my puppy (still unnamed at this point, but I'm working on names). She's a Chihuahua. Sorry... I didn't put that in last night's blog, and I have to say I'm ashamed I didn't know how to spell Chihuahua *smiles*. Thank goodness for google! I should say that she is mostly Chihuahua. Her dad was allegedly a pure-bred, but mom was mixed. I can't remember what they said the mother was, part Chihuahua and something else. She did okay and was glad to see me when I got home! Right now she's resting in her doggy bed.
Work went okay, we had a staff meeting this afternoon, otherwise I spent the day reading through our "Operating manual." Of course... let me back up & say that when I went into work, I was carrying the little wicker 3 basket stand, the little rug in my office, my bag & my LARGE drink mug. The door was still locked, so I had to unlock it and as I opened the door, my large mug fell on the floor spilling all over the place. Fortunately, at that point, only the secretary was there. One of my co-workers came in shortly after, but by then I had 1/2 of it mopped up.
After work I did make it to the gym, I saw a fellow social worker there and she said they were going to have a position coming open at their clinic and suggested that I should put in for it. But I said "no." I need to focus on learning everything I can in my current position and be there at least a year. *smiles*
Okay... time to sign off... I'm going to try my "Outdoor Challenge" game of the Wii.
Aloha!

New Member of the family...

I'll get a better picture, I just took these with my phone. I finally bought a puppy. She's only 6 weeks old and I've only had her about an hour and a half at this time. I haven't even decided on a name yet. (Yoda, Tabitha, baby...). She's *not* a purebred, but she'll be a small dog. I need to take her into a vet for some shots & a thorough check-up. She probably will need to be de-wormed. When I was at Walmart buying puppy stuff, a ran into a local family who suggested a vet down in Waipahu (not too far from where I live).
Almost every weekend when I come home, I pass a park that often has families there selling puppies. Usually they are pitbull mixes, today they had this little one and her siblings. I stoped on my way home, then went back a little later after deciding to get one.
Other than that... I went in to church this morning. Dean preached, it was his first Sunday back preaching since his stroke. He looked good and seemed glad to be back. I sang in the "Gospel Choir" and then hung around afterwards for brunch & chatted with one of my former neighbors. Then I stopped by to see my friend Michelle. I haven't talked to her very much lately, she's been busy with a relatively new job & she's working on her MSW, so she's busy with classes.
After stopping to see Michelle, I went over to Ala Moana (mall) and wandered around awhile. I also went & saw "The Bodies Exhibition" again.
Now I'm home taking it easy, puppy is sleeping and I'll have to get used to having a puppy around!

Rub a dub dub... we were all in one BIG tub today!

So... I'll start with the best part first, UH beat Nevada in a nail biter at the end, 38 to 31. Whew! We *were* ahead at one point, 31 to 17, but NV was able to come up & tie us at 31-31 and it wasn't until about the last 20 seconds of the game that we finally got a touchdown to get ahead of them.
It was a VERY wet game. I was surprised at how many people were there for as wet as it was for the 1st half!

If you look at the orange seats to the left, you can kind of see how wet it was. This was as I was waiting for the game to start. It was raining ALL day (no one better come on the news this next week & say we had a "nice" weekend, because it sure wasn't nice today!). As I said, it rained ALL day! So, I took it easy this morning, cleaned up around my apartment, took time to read my newspaper & then went down and got my nails done. I also went & bought a 32" for my bedroom. Now I just need to have the cable company come out & hook it up. It will only cost me a dollar more, because when I called the company today, I asked them to stop my HBO, because I very seldom watch movies.
I hope tomorrow is a nicer day, although because I'll be going to church at 11:30, it kind of messes up my being able to go the beach (because I have to dress up (a little anyway) for church), although I guess if it is nice, I *could* go after church. After the way today looked, I'm not holding much hope for sunny weather tomorrow.
Okay... time to sign off, it's 11:30pm.
Aloha!

It's Aloha Friday... no work til Monday...

If the weather is nice tomorrow (Saturday), this is where I hope to be for a couple hours before I have to come back and get ready for the UH game.

Work went okay today, I got my first client, someone who has allegations of neglect. It sounds like she's a young mom who has been reported because she's not a good housekeeper & doesn't change the bedding very often & doesn't bathe her children often enough. Should be interesting.
Other than that, I did some online training today, it was another quiet day. Oh yea... and they came and took some file cabinets out of my office & cleaned it up a little... it looks a LOT less like a storage room now. I think Sunday evening I may go up and hang some pictures, even though we are only going to be there temporarily (in that building til April). Tonight I went & got a bite to eat at "Dixie Grill," I was hoping to see my favorite Waiter, Adam, but he was off tonight. He's as cute as a button, about 6'4" tall. I've known him since he was at the old Dixie Grill near where I used to live. I've known him as he got engaged, married & already divorced. (He's only about 30, I think). Nice kid though.

Anyway, afterwards I went to KMart and picked up an inexpensive rug & a little wicker 4 drawer table thing (it's about a foot square, but I don't have room for anything bigger). I think I figured out today that my office is about 10x7'. Pretty darn tiny! But at least it is only temporary. If I remember I'll take some pictures when I get it done. It was already looking a lot better today, not that I have any pictures to show the difference now.

It *was* nice today, a bunch of us went to lunch together. It gives us a chance to get to know each other more informally.

Okay... It's about 11:30pm (I've been playing with my Wii a little since I got home). I need to head to bed though so I can get up & hopefully head to the beach in the morning and then I'll be watching UH play some football tomorrow late afternoon/evening.

Aloha!

Thursday?

Wow... where has the week gone? I'm glad it has gone as fast as it has, and the longer I'm in my new position, the more I'm happy about the decision (at least at this point). It's so mellow and everyone gets along really well (they got along okay in my last position as well, but there wasn't the level of commaderie - mainly because everyone is in their own world - because they had to be, it was just SO hectic). Today I co-facilitated a couple groups and did a online training course required for my position and then I *did* go to the gym and I did a 1/2 hour on the treadmill. It was good to see my friends that work there at the gym.

In other news... as I write this Obama has just landed on the island to visit his "Tu-Tu" (Hawaiian for grandma), I'm sure most people are aware that she fell & broke her hip a couple weeks ago, it sounds like she's not doing very well. For those of you who pray... please keep her in your prayers and I hope that Obama is able to have some quality time with her while he is here for his very short visit.

Also, in the news tonight they said that the fire at the Church preschool was arson. I hope they are able to catch whoever did it.

Okay... time to sign off... I've been watching "Survivor" and it's almost over, I think I'll get my Wii out and play with it for an hour or so, then watch the news & head to bed.

Aloha!

yikes!

So... this is Central Union Church (where I am a member & supposed to sing in the choir on Sunday). This morning (early, shortly after 4am) they had a fire in the Preschool, which destroyed most of the building (the preschool is behind the building in the above picture). It sounds like it started in a storage room, it's too early to determine the cause. The Preschool building(s) is 104 years old, Central Union has quite a long history on the island. Had I still lived in my old apartment, I'm sure I would have been awaken by the fire trucks & the smoke that field the neighborhood (I lived 3 blocks away). It's sad that such a historical building burned... although they had been considering building a new preschool. I hope they had insurance. (They did have fire alarms installed recently).

Work went okay, I kind of spent the day "putzing", researching some information, doing some reading, and talking with co-workers (getting oriented). Again, I'm thankful for this slow start so that I am able to take it easy while I still have this head cold. I *didn't* exercise last night as I had planned... oh well. And I didn't go exercise after work either... maybe tomorrow?

Tomorrow I'll be sitting in on a couple more groups, I'm looking forward to doing that. It will break up the day. I *did* meet with my supervisor today and got a brief orientation. I've got an advantage because I already know the computer system. I have to say though... for those who have seen my other offices, this one is TINY! I think it's about 1ox10! One of our providers is moving though, so I might take her office. Its not any larger and I'm still thinking about it. It's weird though... because it has a sink IN the office (and that's all). Weird.

Okay... time to sign off.

Aloha!

My friend Dean and I

Hey, please pray for my friend Dean. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but he had a stroke a couple weeks ago... and he's one of the most fit guys I know. (He's also one of the pastors at the church I go to).

My 2nd day at work went okay, I co-facilitated a couple groups, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It's the first day I've had any interaction with clients and wouldn't you know it... I recognized a couple & had counseled the wife of one. (Of course, I would never admit that to him, I can't). Otherwise, I spent some time getting to know a couple of my co-workers, enjoyed lunch with them (they generally eat lunch together) and starting reading through the "Standard Operating Procedures" for our clinic. I'll probably start taking on clients next week. Sure seems a lot more mellow than the last place I worked!

I still didn't go to the gym after work yet, my head cold is a little better, but I'm still not to the point of going to the gym. I'm thinking that I might try to get on my gazelle for a little bit as I watch "The Biggest Loser."

Okay... I'm signing off (oh yea... last night I was asleep by 9:30).

Aloha!

New home?

I believe the tour guide said that this home is for sale, for a little over 3 million dollars (on Mackinac Island). There were a LOT of mansions on Mackinac Island.

Well... today was my first day in my new position. I spent the morning in-processing, I think I only have one more thing to do, but it's no big deal and I'll probably get to it next week (after I know I am in the system). I guess one good thing, it looks like they are hiring 3 more Social Workers (at least), and I'll have seniority over them (not that it probably matters much, but you never know...). I did stop by my old office and got to say hi to some of my former co-workers. I had to turn in my keys. It was nice to know I've been missed.

This afternoon I participated in a meeting, but didn't get much else done. Tomorrow I sit down with one of my new co-workers who is getting ready to leave (she's leaving the state) and I'll start going over her cases with her, as I'll be taking them over. It sounds like she has the lightest caseload, as she has been closing cases in her preparation for moving.

I've still got my headcold, still feel miserable. Last night I was asleep by 9pm (that's *really* good for me). Other than having my dinner tonight, I haven't been doing anything, just "chillin'" and watching some TV. I wish I felt better... I'd get on my Wii Fit or something... but will give myself a couple days off.

Okay... I'm going to sign off...

Aloha!

Fall Colors in Michigan...

Okay... thought I would put some pictures of Fall in Michigan. Sure was pretty!
It's Sunday evening... I got my office unloaded today (although I'm not sure where I'm going to put everything until I move into my new office, especially since I will be moving to my next office for about 5 months before I have to move again. And yes, I did get help with the books (whew!).
I'm still very congested and feel lousy, but I'm a tad better than yesterday. It's a little after 6, I'm watching some TV (60 minutes) and plan to go to bed early tonight. I need the rest. Before I go to bed, I still need to figure out what I'm wearing tomorrow. Most of the day will probably be spent out-processing & in-processing.
I didn't make it to the beach today... the weather was so-so... I slept in a little bit, and then cleaned up my apartment and then spent the afternoon packing up & moving out of my old office.
Okay... I'm going to sign off...
Aloha!

Yucky head cold

This head cold is for the birds (pics above taken on Mackinac Island).
I stayed up unpacking last night (and watched my taped Wheel of Fortune from last night & watched my taped "Biggest Loser"), but when I went to bed, I sure slept lousy, because I couldn't breathe through my nose. It cleared up a little by the time I was waking up. I kept a box of kleenix by the bed. This morning I have a sinus pressure headache. I'm doing laundry & trying to figure out how best to spend the day. The weatherman had said it was supposed to be a beautiful day, but I woke up to rain. Maybe it will clear up a little later? I need to scrounge some boxes so I can go start packing up my office. I may have found a friend to come help me with the books tomorrow.
Okay... just got on to grumble about my head cold.
Ugh...

Sitting in Seattle

Our first late afternoon/evening on Mackinac Island was wet... but people just bundle up and are thankful that it hasn't started snowing yet.
Looking down on the town and boat harbor...

So typical...
Luggage is transported on bikes, sometimes towing a cart. Most often it seems like they just put it in the front of their baskets, precariously balanced & they take off down to the hotel. This was Zach, he took our luggage to & from the hotel.

If you'd like, you can ride to the hotel in GRAND style... this is actually one of the carriages for the Grand Hotel.

This is where we stayed at the Harbor View Inn, we were in a back house (the "guest" house). Its hard to believe that many years ago, these were private residences!

This is the "Grand" hotel that was made famous in the movie "Somewhere in Time." I think it is one of the most expensive places to stay on the island, and if you stay there and want to eat dinner there, you *have* to dress up in a suit & tie for the men, and the women can wear a dress or elegant pant suit.

This is the Mackinac bridge, it's a long story, but we ended up crossing it three times. It is 28 feet short of 5 miles across. It's a beautiful bridge connecting the lower & upper Peninsulas of Michigan.

I thought you might enjoy these pictures, I'll post more later this weekend or this week. Righ tnow I would go ahead and post my blog now, so I won't have to worry about it when I get home. I should be boarding within an hour at this point. It looks like the flight will be delayed about a half an hour leaving (due to leaving it's originating point).
I'll sign off now so I can get a potty break in before the board.
Aloha!
